Activities :: Bring Nature Home

Thanks for stopping by! I love that you're here, and I hope you take a moment to look around. Gain some inspiration, then shut down the computer and get outside!

Not sure what to do once you're out there? Try exploring your yard or a nearby park.

  • How many different kinds of animals can you spot? What do they eat? How do they eat it?
  • Can you find differences between similar kinds of critters? Or compare two critters that seem different -- what do they have in common?
  • What kinds of plants do you see? Do they all grow in the same places, or do some prefer more sun? More shade? Lots of water or dry soil?
  • Pick up a rock or roll a log and see what lives underneath. Yes, it's dirty, but you don't have to touch. Just look. Then carefully replace the rock or log -- it's home to millions of critters!
  • Go outside at night and see how many stars you can spot. What phase is the moon in?
  • Take the family on a drive out of town. Does the night sky look different from at home? Can you identify any constellations?
  • Go hiking or camping. What do you hear? Do the sounds change over time?
  • Get dirty. Splash in water. Not only is it good for the soul, it's good for the immune system! (Really!)

Need more ideas for things to do outside? You're in luck. There is a growing number of resources designed to get kids and families outside. Check out the links below for inspiration and HAVE FUN!
